The Institute of Eastern Slavonic Studies, a structural unit within the Faculty of Philology at the Jagiellonian University, has been operating under its current name since 1989. It is the direct successor and continuer of over 200 years of research into the Slavonic East at Poland's oldest academic institution. At present, the Institute boasts a diverse staff of 50 members.
The Institute's staff undertakes interdisciplinary cultural research across all domains of Eastern Slavonic studies. This includes linguistic inquiries into the historical and contemporary aspects of Eastern Slavonic languages, as well as linguistic, literary, cultural, and semiotic research on the discourses of the societies of the region. Topics of focus include literary, political, legal, religious, and media discourse, alongside research on the literary traditions and contemporary literary phenomena of Ukraine, Russia, and Belarus. The Institute also explores the historical and contemporary connections between Eastern Slavonic cultures and Polish culture, conducting humanistic research on memory and its carriers.
The Institute offers a variety of undergraduate programs, such as 'East European Studies: Languages and Discourses' (taught in English), 'Russian Philology' (in Polish and Russian), 'Ukrainian Philology with the Russian Language' (in Polish and Ukrainian), and 'Carpathian Region: Ethnolinguistics and Cultural Studies' (in Polish and English).
